FAQ

What is a planting calendar?

A planting calendar is a list that lists plants that should be planted at specific times throughout the year. The goal is for plants to grow at their best while minimizing stress. So, for example, spring crops such as lettuce, spinach, or peas should not be sown before the last frost date. Later spring crops include cucumbers, squash, and summer beans. Fall crops include potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and broccoli.

What vegetables are good to grow together?

It is possible to grow tomatoes and peppers together, as they like the same soil conditions and temperatures. They are a good match since peppers need colder temperatures to produce their best flavor. Plant them together indoors at least six weeks before you plant them. When the weather is warm, transplant the pepper and tomato plants outside.

How much light does a tree need?

It depends on the plant. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunlight per day. Some plants prefer 8 hours of direct sunlight. Vegetables require at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

How do I know what type of soil I have?

By looking at the dirt's color, you can tell. Darker soils contain more organic matter than lighter-colored ones. Soil testing is another option. These tests are used to determine the quantity of nutrients in soil.

Can I grow vegetables in my backyard?

You might be wondering if you have enough space to grow a vegetable garden if you don't have one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It just takes some planning. For example, you can build raised beds just 6 inches high. Containers can be used in place of raised beds. You will still get plenty of produce regardless of how you do it.

How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. It's great for flavoring dishes, adding flavor to soups, sauces, salads, pasta, and even desserts. Here are some tips for growing basil indoors at home.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annual and will not live more than one season if it isn't in the right spot. It prefers full sunshine but can tolerate some shade. If you are growing it outside, choose a spot with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted at least two weeks before the last frost date. Plant the seeds in small pots that are 1/2 inch deep. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination can take up to ten days. Once they are germinated, transfer them to a protected area where the temperatures are at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. The plastic wrap should be removed and the seedlings transplanted into larger containers. Add potting mix to each container. You can add more potting mix if necessary. Place the containers outside in direct light or in a sunny area. Mist the plants regularly to keep them from wilting.
  4. After the dangers of frost have passed, mulch the plants. This will protect them against cold weather and reduce water losses.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil requires regular watering in order to thrive. A rain gauge can be used to measure how much water plants need. Use a timer to automatically turn off irrigation during dry spells.
  6. When your basil reaches its peak, pick it. For bushier growth, pick leaves more often.
  7. Dry the leaves on paper towels or screens. Dry the leaves in glass jars and bags in the fridge.
