How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
