FAQ

How do I determine the type of soil that I have?

The dirt's color can tell you what it is. The soil color will tell you if it contains more organic matter than the lighter ones. You can also do soil tests. These tests determine the amount of nutrients in the soil.

When should you plant herbs?

Spring should be when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees F. For best results, plant them in full sunlight. Basil indoors can be grown in pots with potting mixture. They should be kept out of direct sunlight until they grow leaves. Once plants start growing, move them into bright indirect light. After three weeks, you can transplant them to individual pots and water them every day.

Which type of lighting is best for indoor plants?

Because they emit less heat, floralescent lights are great for indoor gardening. They also provide consistent lighting without flickering or dimming. You can find regular or compact fluorescent fluorescent bulbs. CFLs are up to 75% cheaper than traditional bulbs.

What should you do first when you start a garden?

The first step to starting a garden is to prepare it. This includes adding organic matter like composted cow manure, grass clippings leaves, straw, and so on, which will help to provide plant nutrients. Next, plant seeds or seedlings into prepared holes. Finally, water thoroughly.

What is a planting plan?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. For example, early spring crops such as peas, spinach, and lettuce should be sown after the last frost date. Cucumbers, squash, and spring beans are later crops. Fall crops include cabbage, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and cauliflower.

Are pots possible to grow fruit trees?

Yes! Fruit trees can be grown in pots if you're short on space. To prevent tree rot, make sure the pot has drainage holes. Also, ensure the pot is deep enough to hold the root ball. This will stop the tree becoming stressed.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
