Alfalfa pellets, for instance, contain a hormone called triacontanol, which helps stimulate plant growth. Water-soluble fertilizers can also be found. They provide nutrients directly to the plant’s roots.

FAQ

What is your favorite vegetable garden layout?

Your location will determine the best layout for your vegetable garden. If you live in the city, you should plant vegetables together for easy harvesting. If you live in a rural location, you will need to space your plants out for maximum yield.

What vegetables are good to grow together?

Growing tomatoes and peppers together is excellent because they both like similar temperatures and soil conditions. They work well together as tomatoes need heat to ripen and peppers need lower temperatures for optimal flavor. Start seeds indoors approximately six weeks prior to planting. Once the weather warms up, transplant the tomato and pepper plants outdoors.

What is the purpose of a planting calendar?

A planting schedule is a list listing the dates when plants should be planted. The goal of the planting calendar is to increase plant growth while minimizing stress. For example, early spring crops such as peas, spinach, and lettuce should be sown after the last frost date. Spring crops later include squash, cucumbers, summer beans, and squash. Fall crops include cabbage, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and cauliflower.

How to grow basil

Basil is one the most versatile herbs that you can use in your home. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. Here are some ways to grow basil indoors.

  1. It is important to choose the right location. Basil is an annual and will not live more than one season if it isn't in the right spot. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers full sun. If you want to grow it outside choose an area that is well-ventilated.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds must be planted at the latest two weeks before last frost. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. Clear plastic wrap should be used to cover the pots. Germination usually takes about ten days. Once they are germinated, transfer them to a protected area where the temperatures are at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Transplant the seedlings once they're big enough to handle. Transplant the seedlings into larger pots by removing the plastic wrap. Each container should be filled with potting mix. To help remove excess moisture, add gravel or pebbles. As needed, add more potting mixture. Place the containers in indirect or sunny light. Mist the plants regularly to keep them from wilting.
  4. After the danger of frost has passed, apply a thick layer of mulch over the top of the plants. This will protect the plants from freezing weather and decrease water loss.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil requires regular watering in order to thrive. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. A timer can be used to shut off the irrigation system when it is dry.
  6. When your basil reaches its peak, pick it. To encourage bushier growth, pick the leaves often.
  7. The leaves can be dried on paper towels or screens. Keep the dried leaves in glass containers or bags in a refrigerator.
