Tips for Organic Vegetable gardening

Vegetable Gardening

Organic gardening is the best choice when it comes to vegetables, flowers, or ornamental plant. This form of agriculture follows the principles of organic farming and uses organic fertilizers as well as pest management and soil building. It also preserves heirloom plants. This type of gardening is a great way to reduce food and water bills while also promoting health and the environment. Organic vegetables are not the only option. Many other types of plants can be grown without a lot of work, too.

Knowing how to eradicate pests is the first step in organic gardening. The best way to do this is to use companion plants. This type of plant will thwart pests and increase the flavor of your plants. Amaranth and basil are two of the most preferred companion plants to tomatoes. Both these companion plants will improve the growth of your tomatoes and prevent them from getting sick. Some plants are easier to grow than others. Plants that are both hardy and easy for those with limited knowledge should be chosen by those who don't have much experience in gardening.

FAQ

When is it best to plant herbs?

When the soil temperature is 55°F, herbs should be planted in spring. Plant them in full sun for best results. To grow basil indoors you need to place the seedlings inside pots that have been filled with potting soil. Once they start sprouting leaves, keep them out from direct sunlight. After plants begin to grow, you can move them into indirect sunlight. After about three weeks, transplant them to individual containers and continue to water them regularly.

How can I tell what kind of soil is mine?

By looking at the dirt's color, you can tell. The soil color will tell you if it contains more organic matter than the lighter ones. Soil tests are another option. These tests determine the amount of nutrients in the soil.

How big is a vegetable gardening space?

A good rule of thumb is that one square foot of soil requires 1/2 pound of seed. You will need 100 pounds of seed if your area is 10 feet by 10 foot (3 meters by 3 metres).

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
