How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
