FAQ

When should you plant herbs?

The ideal time to plant herbs is springtime, when the soil temperature is 55°F. The best results are achieved when they are in full sunshine. For basil indoors, plant seedlings in potting mix-filled pots and let them grow until they produce leaves. After plants begin to grow, you can move them into indirect sunlight. After approximately three weeks, transplant them into individual containers. Continue to water them as needed.

How much light does a tree need?

It depends on which plant it is. Some plants need 12 hours per day of direct sunlight. Some prefer 8 hours of indirect sunshine. Most vegetables require 10 hours direct sunlight in a 24-hour period.

Which seeds should I start indoors and which ones should I avoid?

Tomato seeds are the best choice for starting indoors. Tomatoes are very easy to grow and produce fruit year-round. When growing tomatoes in pots, be careful when transplanting them into the ground. You should not plant tomatoes too soon. The soil can dry out, and the roots could rot. Plant diseases like bacterial disease can quickly kill plants.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
