How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
