FAQ

Do I have enough space to plant a vegetable or fruit garden in my backyard?

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It's all about planning. Raised beds can be built as low as 6 inches. Or you can use containers to build raised beds. You'll still be able to get plenty of produce in any way.

How do I know what type of soil I have?

It is easy to tell the difference by the color of your dirt. You will find more organic matter in darker soils that those of lighter colors. Soil testing is another option. These tests can measure the soil's nutrients.

Do I need special equipment to grow vegetables in my garden?

Non, really. All you need to do is use a shovel, trowels, watering containers, and maybe even a rake.

Can I grow fruit trees in pots?

Yes! Fruit trees can be grown in pots if you're short on space. You should make sure that your pot has drainage holes to keep excess moisture from rotting the tree. Also, ensure the pot is deep enough to hold the root ball. This will protect the tree from being stressed.

Which seeds can be planted indoors?

Tomato seeds are the best choice for starting indoors. Tomatoes are easy to grow, and they produce fruit all year round. Plant tomatoes in pots and be careful about putting them in the ground. You should not plant tomatoes too soon. The soil can dry out, and the roots could rot. Plant diseases like bacterial disease can quickly kill plants.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
