beginner gardening tips

You can prepare your garden for winter regardless of whether it is in zone 7 or 8. You should cut down perennials to 2 to 3 inches. For spring flowers to bloom, you should leave your compost pile watered. This will give you an advantage for the next growing year. Here's a checklist of essential tasks for late autumn gardening. The first step is to remove any old leaves and dead plants from flower beds.

November is the ideal month for those who hate to prune their plants and flowers. Remember to cover the area with 6 inches of mulch to prevent weed growth. You can use the root vegetables for vegetables or other plants to harvest and plant new ones. Some people even grow Christmas trees in November. You should not prune your plant too much or it will freeze solid so you cannot start replanting.

Perennials can be divided in November. You can take cuttings to make identical plants. You can also split a large perennial to revitalize it. Just make sure not to disturb the roots of the plants - if you do, you'll destroy their delicate leaves. A good garden spade is all you need to divide a perennial.

Winter is approaching, so it's time prepare your garden for the cold. In northern regions, November is a great time to evaluate your garden's architecture and make improvements. For southerners, the cold weather lays everything bare, revealing the design and layout of your garden. In the south, the time spent in winter will pay off in springtime. You can then focus on your gardening when the weather warms up.

November is busy for zone 8 and higher when it comes to vegetable gardening. You can transplant vegetables and fruit trees under cover. You should water your plants as usual and continue to harvest what is there. Then, you can start planning your garden for the following spring. You will see the results after a few months of hard labor. Your efforts will be rewarded in the long run. Winter is coming!

FAQ

Can I plant fruit trees in pots

Yes! Yes! Ensure your pot has drainage holes so excess moisture won't rot the tree. You should also ensure that the pot is deep sufficient to support the root ball. This will stop the tree becoming stressed.

When to plant flowers?

Planting flowers during springtime is best when temperatures are warm and the soil feels moist. Planting flowers should be done after the first frost if you live in a cold climate. The ideal temperature to grow plants indoors is 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Is there enough space in my backyard to grow a vegetable garden.

If you don't already have a vegetable garden, you might wonder whether you'll have enough room for one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. You just need to plan. You could make raised beds that are only 6 inches tall. You can also use containers as raised beds. You'll still be able to get plenty of produce in any way.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
