Marjoram: Is it a Perennial Undershrub

indoor herb gardening 101

The marjoram plant is a perennial undershrub with a distinctive pine and citrus flavour. It is often confused with oregano, but is often used in place of it. It can be used to make perfume or cook, depending on which cultivar it is. It is a common culinary herb, especially in Mediterranean countries. There are two types, sweet and knotted marjoram. Here are some tips on how to grow marjoram.

Marjoram is a perennial that can tolerate all soil types and lighting conditions. The seeds should be planted at least six to eight weeks before their last frost. The seeds should be planted at least two to four inches below soil surface. The seedlings will germinate in ten days. Therefore, it is important to plant them in moist areas and under a grow lamp. They will need extra protection from the cold during the fall.

Cutworms and spider mites need to be controlled in order to achieve the best results. Protect the stems and leaves with foil collars. These pests can be prevented by using a copper-fungicide. Flies can also be a problem but they can be controlled with a yellow sticky trap. If you have sap flies, you will be able to control them with neem or copper fungicide.

Marjoram can also be grown from seeds. Simply break the top of a fresh stem and use it for rooting. If you have difficulty starting the seeds outdoors, it is possible to do so indoors. This method is usually more successful than direct sowing. Follow these steps to grow healthy marjoram plants. The plant is ready to be eaten when it emerges from the stem.

Because marjoram plant tends to trail, it requires lots of sunlight. However, it can grow in a small pot. A 6-inch pot will do the best as the plant will need more space. By mixing equal parts of soil and decomposed Granite, you can also make your potting mix. This will make the soil acidic or neutral, so add some peatmoss.

If marjoram plants are being grown outside, they can be transplanted in the ground after the risk has passed. Marjoram doesn't need a special container and can be moved directly into your garden, unlike oregano. The plant will live in the garden for up to three to four years. It can also be moved around easily. Plant marjoram in full sunshine. Or, you could plant it in a container in a sunny location.

Marjoram can also be grown in pots if there is enough space. You can also grow marjoram cuttings by cutting a mature plant into six-inch stems. Put the leaves in a rooting herb and then put them in moisturized soil. To avoid stem brittleness, it is important to keep the soil dry at all times. You can cure them with neem oil if they haven't been dried.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
