How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
