How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
