How To

Basil Growing Tips

Basil is one among the most versatile herbs you could use in your kitchen. Basil is great for flavoring foods, including soups, sauces and pastas. These are some helpful tips to help you grow basil indoors.

  1. Be careful about where you place it. Basil is an annual plant and will only live one season if it's not in the right place. Basil is tolerant to partial shade, but it prefers full sun. If you are growing it outside, choose a spot with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should not be planted more than two weeks prior to the last frost date. In small pots with potting mixture, sow seeds about 1/2 inch deep. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination can take up to ten days. Once the pots are germinated, you can move them to a place where temperatures remain around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. When the seedlings reach maturity, you can transplant them. The plastic wrap should be removed and the seedlings transplanted into larger containers. Pour the potting mix into each container. Add gravel or pebbles to drain excess moisture. You can add more potting mix if necessary. The containers should be placed in a sunny location or under indirect lighting. Mist the plants regularly to keep them from wilting.
  4. After the dangers of frost have passed, mulch the plants. This will protect them against cold weather and reduce water losses.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil requires regular watering in order to thrive. To check how much water your plants need, you can use a rain gauge. You can also use a timer for the irrigation system to be turned off during dry spells.
  6. Make sure to pick basil right when it is at its peak. Pick the leaves regularly to encourage bushier, healthier growth.
  7. The leaves can be dried on paper towels or screens. Store dried leaves in glass jars or bags in the refrigerator.
