FAQ

What is your favorite vegetable garden layout?

The location of your home will dictate the layout of your vegetable garden. For easy harvesting, it is best to plant vegetables in the same area as your home. If you live in a rural location, you will need to space your plants out for maximum yield.

Can I grow vegetables inside?

Yes, it's possible to grow vegetables inside during the winter months. You will need a greenhouse or grow lighting. Make sure to check with local laws before doing this.

What length of time can I keep an indoor flower alive?

Indoor plants can survive up to ten years. However, it's important to repot your plant every few months to help promote new growth. Repotting is easy; simply remove the old soil and add fresh compost.

What is a planting plan?

A planting calendar is a list that lists plants that should be planted at specific times throughout the year. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. For example, early spring crops such as peas, spinach, and lettuce should be sown after the last frost date. Later spring crops include cucumbers, squash, and summer beans. Fall crops include potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and broccoli.

Which seeds should you start indoors?

A tomato seed is the best for indoor gardening. Tomatoes are very easy to grow and produce fruit year-round. When growing tomatoes in pots, be careful when transplanting them into the ground. Planting tomatoes too early can lead to soil drying out which could lead roots to rot. Also, be aware of diseases such as bacterial wilt, which can kill plants quickly.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
