FAQ

What is a planting schedule?

A planting calendar is a list of plants that should be planted at different times throughout the year. The goal of a planting calendar is to maximize plant growth and minimize stress. For example, early spring crops like lettuce, spinach, and peas should be sown after the last frost date. Spring crops later include squash, cucumbers, summer beans, and squash. Fall crops include carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and potatoes.

What size space is required for a vegetable garden?

The rule of thumb is to use 1/2 pound seed per square foot. For example, if you have a 10 foot by 10 foot area (3 meters by three meters), 100 pounds of seeds will be required.

What type of lighting is best to grow plants indoors?

Because they emit less heat than traditional incandescent bulbs, Florescent lights are ideal for indoor plant growth. They provide steady lighting without dimming or flickering. There are two types of fluorescent bulbs: regular and compact fluorescent (CFL). CFLs are up to 75% cheaper than traditional bulbs.

How do I determine the type of soil that I have?

It is easy to tell the difference by the color of your dirt. The soil color will tell you if it contains more organic matter than the lighter ones. A second option is soil testing. These tests determine the amount of nutrients in the soil.

What vegetables do you recommend growing together?

It is possible to grow tomatoes and peppers together, as they like the same soil conditions and temperatures. They complement each other well since tomatoes need heat to ripen while peppers require cooler temperatures for optimal flavor. If you want to try growing them together, start seeds indoors about six weeks before planting them. Once the weather cools down, transplant the pepper or tomato plants outdoors.

Which seeds should start indoors?

The best seed for starting indoors is a tomato seed. Tomatoes are very easy to grow and produce fruit year-round. It is important to be careful when planting tomatoes in containers. Planting too soon can cause soil to dry out and root rot. You should also be aware of diseases like bacterial Wilt that can quickly kill your plants.

How often should my indoor plants be watered?

Watering indoor plants should be done every two days. It is important to maintain the humidity level in your home. Humidity can be vital for plants that are healthy.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
